I'm using some rather bass-heavy headphones, so I have an EQ to fix that and I like to add a bit of (good) reverb on my system sound through AU Lab. I output into Soundflower, use Soundflower as input in AU Lab, run it through the effects and output it to the Built-In Output (headphones).

Problem is, I have strange issues with AU Lab. No matter what I do, it will crackle, I have tried every single sensible thing, but even with all the effects bypassed, it crackles. I have also increased the buffer in Soundflower to the max but it still crackles. I have used Soundflower through LineIn before and know that AU Lab must be the problem. However, I cannot find an alternative. Audacity does not do real-time effects and a full-on DAW is too heavy. Is there any AU Lab alternative or an other way to use plugins on my system audio?

It's seems to be hosed for me. It's a requirement for a once -awesome iTunes plugin, Audio Essentials. D/l-ing it from Mac Update brought me a browser virus that took quite a while to undo (search the Apple BBS for the answer, if you're infected, too). D/l-ing it directly from Rogue Amoeba's website the Mac wouldn't let me install it because it didn't come from the App Store. I turned that setting off for one install and was treated to a system freeze.

I think it fell victim of Apple's reneging on KEXTs, or system extensions (which is what SoundFlower is) rightly seeing an OS 9 type mess ahead of themselves if they let developers use KEXTs, startup conflicts could become severe as they build out the OS.

It's too bad, Audio Essentials seriously boosted the sound quality of anything playing in iTunes as well as correctly detected the Genre of any tune or piece and changed to the levels in iTunes accordingly. That much hassle just isn't worth it. I should try to see it the App Store carries it, I suppose.
