Warren Bennett (born 4 July 1962) is an English musician, composer and performer.He was educated at Mill Hill School and is the son of Brian Bennett, the Shadows' drummer. He has played keyboards on tour with the Shadows from 2004 until the present day with and without one-time front man Cliff Richard.Warren’s professional musical career began in 1977 when, aged 15 his first composition for television was used for ITV’s Summer Promotional Campaign. Also that year he co-wrote ‘The Girls Back Home’, which was released as a single from the ‘Rock Dreams’ album by the Brian Bennett Band. This initial success, especially in television, led to him becoming not only an accomplished musician, writer and producer (with over 70 albums) but also as an established composer for feature films.

His feature credits include: Chaos & Cadavers, the black comedy for Matador Pictures starring Keeley Hawes, Rik Mayall and Nick Moran, Wuthering Heights (starring Robert Cavanah and Sarah Smart), Dear Roy Love Gillian and Access Hollywood (USTV Film). He has also composed and performed the title songs for The American Way (starring Dennis Hopper), The Harpist(Schlemmer Films), Ruth Rendell's classic drama Some Lie And Some Die and Decadence(starring Steven Berkoff and Joan Collins).

Early career[edit]

As a performer, Warren’s career began in 1980 when his group ’Glass Ties’ were signed to EMI Records. During this period they released two singles and toured extensively. This then led to his first association with The Shadows when he co-wrote ‘You Rescue Me’ for their ‘Life in the Jungle’ album. As a solo artist, Warren had a year-long stint as support act for Alan Price’s 1984 UK tour.

Collaborations[edit]

Warren has also released two critically acclaimed new age albums of which ‘Pathways to Love’ topped the new age charts.

From 1991-2000, Warren worked as arranger/performer on Hank Marvin’s solo albums and also wrote the title track from Hank’s first album of this period ‘Into the Light’. He was a member of Hank’s touring band on each of his six solo tours between 1994 and 2002.

In 1995, he arranged and performed with Mirage and scored a top ten album hit in the UK with ‘Classic Guitar Moods’.

Warren’s arrangements can also be heard on the 2001 top ten Englebert Humperdinck album ‘I Want To Wake Up With You’ and Darren Day’s album from the musical ‘Summer Holiday.’

In 2004, Warren arranged and produced the first new Shadows recording for fourteen years; the Jerry Lordan penned ‘Life Story’ which reached number 7 in the UK charts. Following on from this success Warren toured as keyboard player with The Shadows on their 2005 tour of Europe. This was followed by arranging and performing on 'Reunited' the 50th Anniversary celebration album by Cliff Richard and The Shadows. After the album was released a 50th anniversary tour was announced, which included Warren on keyboards and percussion. The tour began in September 2009 with 36 shows throughout the UK and continental Europe, extending to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in 2010.

Warren’s own label, Waffles Music, has released three albums by his band The Vibratos (The Ghost Of Old Compton Street, Tornado Alley and The Cappuccino Kid), collaborations with Mark Griffiths (Close To The Hedge) and Ben Marvin (Zookeeper) and a solo album 'Left To My Own Devices'.

Brian Laurence BennettOBE (born 9 February 1940 in Palmers Green, North London, England) is an English drummer, pianist, composer, arranger and record producer of popular music. He is best known as the drummer of the UK rock and roll group, The Shadows. He is father of musician and Shadows band member Warren Bennett.^[1]

Biography

Educated at Hazlewood Lane School, Palmers Green, London and Winchmore Council School, he finished school at the age of sixteen to play drums in a Ramsgateskiffle group performing for holiday makers. After returning to London he became the in-house drummer at The 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho and was a regular performer on Jack Good's TV show Oh Boy!

He then became a member of Marty Wilde's Wildcats in 1959. After a successful period with the Wildcats, during which he appeared on their instrumentalrecord without Wilde (recorded as the Krew Kats), 'Trambone', he backed Tommy Steele for some of his London stage performances, and then in October 1961 he joined Cliff Richard and The Shadows as the replacement for Tony Meehan.

In 1967, Bennett released a solo album of jazz music, entitled Change of Direction, in mono and stereo (neither charted). This was the first solo album by a member of The Shadows. In the 1970s, music by Bennett was selected for several Radley Metzger films, including Barbara Broadcast and The Opening of Misty Beethoven.

He stayed with the group throughout all of their subsequent line-ups, and in May 2005 took part in The Shadows' European tour. During a show in Reykjavík, Iceland he sustained what was thought to be a minor injury to a finger. A splinter from a drumstick pierced under his fingernail on his right hand, he removed it with a pair of old pliers and applied a plaster. A few days later after arriving in Paris, France he was in so much pain he called a doctor. The doctor diagnosed a bad infection and recommended Bennett go to hospital immediately. Thinking it would be a short visit he attended only to find out that it would involve a minor, but very painful, operation to remove the poison. He was due to be playing on stage that evening and had already missed the soundcheck. He arrived at the theatre 15 minutes before the show with his right-hand bandaged and still numb from the anaesthetic. He managed to play for the whole show using an altered playing style.^[2]

In addition to his work with the Shadows he has also appeared in Cliff Richard's backing band and plays piano and occasionally vibraphone.

He has composed many popular TV theme tunes including BBC sports themes such as Rugby Special ('Holy Mackerel') and BBC Golf ('Chase Side Shoot Up'), the sitcoms Robin's Nest and Birds of a Feather, The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Pulaski, Close to Home, Murder in Mind and, with his son Warren, composed and played the incidental music in New Tricks. Two of his most famous works were 'The Journey' and 'Just a Minute' written under the alias James Aldenham and used for the ITV Schools on 4 broadcasts between 1987–1993. He scored the British-German film The Harpist in 1999.

He is also an orchestral conductor, having learned how to arrange and conduct music for orchestras from a correspondence course. His son Warren Bennett formerly played keyboards for the band Glass Ties, and is also a composer and producer.

Honours

He was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to music.

Bennett runs a home recording studio, Honeyhill studios, in Radlett, Hertfordshire.In November 2009, at the age of 69, Bennett completed a 50th Anniversary reunion world tour with Cliff Richard and the Shadows.
